Consider a population of beetles that feeds on grass. An enzyme
the beetles need to digest the grass is coded for by a single gene
with two alleles in the population, R and r. Initially, the allele
frequencies are equal and the population is in HW equilibrium. A
drought then kills all grasses except some that are fibrous and
more difficult to eat. During the drought, homozygous rr
individuals and heterozygous individuals have equal fitness, while
homozygous RR individuals have lower fitness than the other two
genotypes. For each of the following statements, mark A for True or
B for False. Let’s say this population experiences a bottleneck
that causes the r allele to become lost.
Following the bottleneck, genetic drift will increase the
percentage of individuals able to digest the tough grass in the
population.
