Problem 2 (20 points). 1-Pentanol (CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH₂-OH) is an organic alcohol, with the structure shown as below. CH3- OH a) Estimate the octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow) for 1-pentanol. b) Estimate the Henry's law constant (H) for 1-pentanol. c) 1-Pentanol can cause poisoning by inhalation. The dose response relationship between the amount of inhaled 1-pentanol and risk of poisoning is P = kx I. P is the poisoning risk probability. k is the slope factor, with the value of 3×105 mol¹. I is the amount (in mol) of 1-pentanol exposed to humans by inhalation. In a chemical plant, works have been frequently exposed to 1-pentanol solution with the concentration of 1 mol/L. Assume that a worker is continuously exposed to this 1-pentanol solution for 3 hours, and the 1-pentanol released from the solution to air can be inhaled by this worker. The inhalation rate of this worker is 80L/hour. Please estimate the risk of poisoning by inhalation of the 1-pentanol for 3 hours. Hint: Calculate the 1-pentanol concentration in air based on Henry's law constant calculated from b). d) Estimate half-life time of 1-pentanol in atmospheric. Assume the concentration of the hydroxyl radical is 2×106 molecules/cm³. e) 1-Pentanol is a commonly used chemical in industry. Assume the reaction below can be used to produce 1-pentanol: Chemical A + Chemical B-1-Pentanol Please estimate the toxicity potential (two indexes calculated from TLV and toxicity factors) of this reaction. You can find the required information in the table below. Compound Pounds of TLV (ppm) Overall chemicals inhalation Overall oral toxicity factor required to toxicity factor produce per pound of 1- pentanol Chemical A 0.5 100 10 100 Chemical B 0.8 50 1000 100 1-Pentanol 1 100 10,000 1,000
