a) After a large fertilizer spill on a farm adjacent to a small pond, a farmer noticed a large algae bloom in the pond and a few dead fish. As a former environmental chemistry student, he decided he wanted to determine the chemical oxygen demand of the pond and took a 10.0 mL sample from the pond. After titrating the sample with 0.01 M potassium dichromate (K₂Cr₂O7), it was determined that 3.29 mL of the dichromate solution was needed to reach the end point. What was the COD of the sample (in mg O₂/L)?
(b) The student in the previous problem then notices the issue on yet another pond on his farm, and takes a COD reading for that pond as well. He gets a value of 134.3 mg O₂/L for the COD. Using the COD value for the second pond, what mass (in mg) of carbohydrate (CH₂O) can be oxidized by the O₂ in 2.0 L of the water (assume no change in temperature)?
