Question 2A (previously an exam question) The kinetics of the following reaction was studied. 2 HgCl₂ (aq) + C₂O4²- (aq) → 2 Cl- (aq) + 2 CO₂ (g) + Hg₂Cl₂ (s) Five separate experiments were conducted, each with a mercury(II) chloride concentration of 1.2×10-³ M and with the oxalate concentrations listed in the table below. For each experiment the natural log of the mercury(II) chloride (In[HgCl₂]) plotted versus time resulted in a straight line with the slopes listed in the table below: [C₂04²-] (M) 0.1 0.2 0.3 0.4 0.5 Slope (s-¹) -1.04×10-7 -4.16×10-7 -9.36×10-7 -1.66x10-6 -2.60×10-6 When plotting the numerical value of the slope versus the oxalate concentration squared, a straight line plot was obtained. This plot had a slope of 8.67×10-³ M-² s¹ and went through (0,0). a. Based on the information given, what can be deduced about the order of reaction for each of the reacting molecules? b. Based on the information given, determine the rate law for the reaction.
