Postlab: 1. Two identical magnets are placed as shown. Using different colored pens sketch the approximate magnetic field vectors at the four labeled points for: . just the horizontal top magnet, • just the vertical bottom magnet, and when both are present. N 2. Two long straight wires are oriented perpendicular to the page. The wires are located at the origin and at (x=+a, y=+a) and carry equal electric currents out of the page. Represent both wires on a sketch of the x-y plane. S (Hint: What will the wires look like from this perspective?) Draw and label vectors to represent i) the direction of the magnetic field produced by the first wire at location (+a, 0), ii) the field produced by the second wire at location (a,0), and iii) the net magnetic field at (a,0). 3. Refer back to your group's solution to the Synthesis Challenge. Write a clear, concise paragraph that provides step-by-step "instructions" on how to determine which bar is a permanent magnet and which is not. Assume that you are writing for someone who capable of following directions, but does not have any specialized knowledge of magnetism. S N D.
