The figure below shows a close-up of the central region of
a capacitor (Links to an external site.) made of two
large metal plates of area 36 cm^2, very close together and charged
equally and oppositely. The charges on the inner surfaces are Q=183
nC and the charges on the outer surfaces are q=37 nC. Consider a
Gaussian surface in the shape of a shoe box traced out in region 1.
Using only the fact that the electric field is expected to be
horizontal everywhere in the region, use Gauss's law to determine
the magnitude of the electric field in the air gap between the
plates. Enter your answer in units of kN/C.
