A 60 kg skateboarder travels on a hilly landscape with
height y as a function of horizontal position x
as shown in the diagram. If the skateboarder starts from 𝑥=17 m
with a speed of 7.7 m/s to the left, what position do they reach
before coming to a stop and reversing direction? Assume that
friction is negligible and that, once they start rolling, the
skateboarder doesn’t push off from the ground to pick up additional
speed.

a. Once the skateboarder has reversed direction once, how
far to the right do they get before reversing direction again?
b. Suppose the same skateboarder again starts moving to the left
from 𝑥=17 m. If they have exactly the minimum speed needed to make
it over the hill between 𝑥=8 m and 𝑥=9 m, what is their speed when
they reach 𝑥=3 m?
c. If the skateboarder started the trip over the hill from 𝑥=17
m and jumped off the board at 𝑥=1 m, where between 17 m and 1 m is
their speed maximum, and what is the speed at that point?
y(m) 10 5 5 10 15 x (m)
