To celebrate a forthcoming Batman movie, a theater owner in Canada wants to launch toy bats over the crowd waiting for the premier. He imagines folding the wings, so the bat and its folded wings fit snugly in a tube. After a spring fires the bat out of the tube, the wings then pop open in 0.02 sec, allowing the bats to soar over the crowd. And he wants to put lights on them, powered by induction as they fly though the earth's magnetic field, which is almost perpendicular to the ground, and has a value of 5 x 10-T there. His plan is to attach a wire as shown, so that when the bat's wings are spread open the wire makes a triangle. The little lights will be at the corners. The wire triangle is 20 cm across, and 10 cm down at center (so its area is 100 cm²). Unfortunately, in a trial run, after a brief 15 sec horizontal flight, travelling at 20 m/s, the toy bats are found to tip over and fall head-first to the ground due to poor weight distribution. D 7. When could the lights turn on? (A) Once the wings open, they light and stay light. (B) While the wings are opening, but no other time. (C) As the bat begins to fall but at no other time. (D) While the wings are opening and as the bat begins to fall. (E) The lights won't turn on, not even weakly. B 8. In principle, the electrical effects of the loop of wire mean (A) the wings would open in less than 0.02 s (B) the wings would open in more than 0.02 s (C) the wings would still open in exactly 0.02 s. 9. If there is field that is into the page and increasing that passes through the triangle shown then (A) it induces a current that flows clockwise (B) it induces a current that flows counterclockwise (C) it induces a current, but you can't say which way it flows (D) no current is induced because the field is perpendicular B 10. When the bat tips over as it begins to fall, (A) the flux increases (B) the flux decreases (C) the flux stays the 11. What is the maximum flux through the wire? (A) 100 T m² (B) 5 x 107T m² (C) 5 x 10³ Tm² (D) 104 T m² same B
