Instead, look carefully at the still image and consider the information below: Four magnetic compasses are placed on a wood rail near a metal wire (the green wire at the middle top, extending roughly out of the page.) A long metal wire (green) extends vertically upward between the rails. The wire is connected across the positive and negative terminals of a variable-voltage power supply. Initially, the power is off and no current runs through the wire. Consider the wire as one long resistor. Current is measured with the digital multimeter (orange digital device shown). Predict what will happen to the compasses when the power is turned on. Justify your answer. Include a sketch of the setup with compass needle directions.
