Consider the furnace shown in Figure 2, which is used to heat
air that is supplied to a catalytic regenerator. The temperature
transmitter is calibrated from 300 to 500°F. The following data
correspond to the response obtained for a step change of + 5% in
the control valve that supplies fuel to the furnace.

a. Draw the block diagram of the control system, specify the

b. From the data, fit the process to a first-order model with dead
time. Determine the coefficient of determination R^2 in the
obtained model.
c) Tune a PID controller whose response fits the 1/4 Ziegler
& Nichols decay criterion. Describe the design of the
controller and its control response using performance graphs.
d. Consider that at minute 40, there is a disturbance on
the air temperature whose model is given by
Gd(s)=T(s)/2=-0.5/(1.8s+1). Determine the maximum deviation in the
temperature that occurs before said disturbance and the time in
which the controller corrects it.
