4. A 2 m wide strip footing was constructed near the top of a slope comprising clayey soils. The edge of the strip footing is located at a distance of 1 m from the top of the slope, as shown in Figure 3(a). This footing has been in existence for a long time and has a load of Pold = 100 kN p.m.r. applied. You have access to the original slope stability design, which indicates that the critical condition was the short-term stability of the planar failure surface marked AB in Figure 3(a). The design report indicates that the undrained shear strength of the clay is cu = 23 kPa and that a factor of safety of F = 1.5 was considered in the design. Another 2 m wide strip footing is to be constructed adjacent to the existing strip footing, as shown in Figure 3(b). The edge of the new strip footing will be located at a distance of 1 m from the existing footing. If the critical condition is the short- term stability of the planar failure surface marked CB in Figure 3(b), determine the maximum allowable load on the new strip footing, Pnew, to ensure a factor of safety of F 1.5.
