2. Figure 2 shows a soil profile with a sand underlain by high plasticity clay and a peat layer, followed by rock. To expedite consolidation and minimize future settlement, an additional 2m thick fill material, compacted to a unit weight of 20.1kN/m² will be placed on top of the sand layer. The plan area of the fill is 8mx8m. The fill load will be left in place for 2 years, after which construction will begin with the fill becoming part of the permanent foundation. Undisturbed samples collected from the clay and organic layers had the following properties (Table 2): Fill load(kN/m²) ↓↓↓↓↓ Table 2 1.5m Sand 7-17kN/m² 7-19.2AN/m² Ca c.(cm²/sec) € 1.5m Layer C Clay 0.31 Peat 7.2 0.048 0.006 1.08 0.029 0.273 6.0 4m Clay 7-18.8EN/m² 1.8mm Peat 7-15kN/m² Rock Figure 2 a. Please evaluate the total consolidation settlement under the action of the fill load. (Consider both the clay and peat layers to be normally consolidated) (10%) b. Please evaluate the total settlement after 2 years. (10%)
