2. A clean sand sample was hydrostatically consolidated under 600 kPa cell pressure and 300 kPa pore pressure in a triaxial test device. Then it was sheared with the drainage valves open (drained shear). At failure, axial stress (01) was 1200 kPa. a) Draw the Mohr circle in effective stress space, and determine the angle of friction of the sand. b) Determine the alignment of failure planes (from the horizontal) and the stresses on the failure planes, at failure. c) A specimen of the same sand at the same density was also tested in a direct shear apparatus under a normal stress of 300 kPa. Estimate the shear stress required to fail the specimen.
