1. Three (3) consolidated undrained triaxial tests, with pore water pressure measurements, were performed on identical samples of soil obtained from a geotechnical investigation for a proposed building. The results of these triaxial tests are given in Table 1 below. During the second test, a problem occurred with the pore water pressure transducer, as shown in the table, which meant that the pore water pressure at failure was not measured. Table 1: Results of consolidated undrained triaxial tests at failure. Pore Water Pressure Principal Stress Difference Sample No. Cell Pressure (kPa) (kPa) (kPa) 1 50 10.8 53.4 2 100 Not recorded 78.1 3 200 57.3 125.7 a) Plot the Mohr circles of stress for the triaxial tests and determine the effective stress parameters c' and '. (12 marks) b) What type of soil was tested? State your reasons. (2 marks) Stating any assumptions made, determine the missing value of pore water pressure for the second stage. (6 marks)
