A sufficient material flow analysis is key to a successful LCA study. While it is not possible to capture all of the associated material flows, the LCA practitioner must ensure that major material flows are captured in the analysis. Therefore, it is important for the LCA practitioner to have sufficient knowledge on the product being analyzed. The goal of this part of the assignment is to plot a material flow analysis for a product of your choice. Instructions: • Select an engineering product that is not too complex • Model materials inputs to your chosen product, i.e. upstream flows (materials needed to produce the end/chosen product) • Provide a minimum of 20 material flows o represent each with boxes o connect materials with arrows to indicate direction of flow • Include at least a few tier 3 entries in your model (ie. a raw material- for a raw material for a raw material- to your chosen product). • Use software or plot your model by hand and scan to digital file • Fit your material flow analysis on 1 page • Use appropriate white space on the page Part 1 assessment criteria: • Sufficiency in the material flows captured upstream Creativity and detail in the choice of material flows • Effective presentation of work
