A simply supported beam with length 𝐿 = 8 ft and flexural
rigidity 𝐸𝐼 = 50 × 106 lb.in2 is subjected to a uniformly
distributed load of 𝑤 = 100 lb/in. Determine the deflection at the
center of the beam using the direct stiffness method, first with
one element and then with two elements. Compare the theoretical
value of the beam deflection (e.g., from a beam deflection table)
with the results. Hint: The beam element shape functions have to be
used to find the deflection at the center of the beam when one
element is used
