Question 1 [10 Marks] An axial flow gas turbine is to be designed to generate 1 MW electric power and is coupled to an axial compressor that consumes 6.2 MW and rotates at 10,000 rpm. The compressor has a mass flow rate of 30 kg/s and the gas turbine combustor operates on an air-fuel ratio of 14.5. i) Determine the power output required from the turbine and the mass flow rate through the turbine. ii) Assuming a mean tangential velocity, Um= 950 ft/s and ATos = 120°, determine the stage loading factor and the mean radius of the blades. iii) Calculate the inlet and outlet blade angles of the first stage rotor and draw the combined inlet and outlet velocity diagram. iv) Determine the degree of reaction, R of the first stage.
