SN1 Rate Study lab questions: 2- promo-2-methylpropane,
2-chloro-2-methylpropane, 2-bromopropane (these are the
electrophiles). Lab directions said to first create a solvent
system of 2-propanol/water (1:1 vs. 2:3 vs 3:2). Then add 3
drop of phenolphthalein, 2 drops of 0.5 M NaOH, and 2 drops
of one of the electrophile.
- why must electrophile be added last?
- why phenolphthalein is used to determine when a reaction is
"done"? Why is NaOH added to the solution?
