1. You are analyzing an unknown compound, Molecule A, that you subject to elemental analysis and find that the molecular formula is CH180. Further analysis of Molecule A indicates that it is not optically active. When you heat this molecule in the presence of 6M H2SO4 a reaction occurs to make 2 isomeric molecules, both of which have the formula CH16. One of the isomeric products with the formula C8H16, Molecule P, is subjected to treatment with warm KMnO4 followed by water to give a 6 carbon ketone and a 2 carbon carboxylic acid product.
