a) You have been approached by the East-West Power Generation
company to investigate the possibility of implementing a
hydroelectric power plant in Sunrise Valley. As part of your
assessment, what concerns or benefits would you mention as to
whether such a scheme could be implemented or not? [8 Marks]
b) As a power engineer working for North-South Industries, they
have asked you to evaluate electrical power use in one of their
factories where there are several loads. The loads are both active
and reactive. They have provided you with a network diagram of the
factory, showing the value of the voltage source as well as the
power values associated with all the different loads. From the
diagram, it is not evident how these loads are connected (i.e.
either in series or parallel). Explain the process involved in
calculating the overall apparent power of the network, the total
line current, and the system power factor. [8 Marks]
c) For another of North-South Industries factories, there is no
circuit diagram available showing how the three phase supply to the
building is connected to the factory as a load. You have been made
aware of the amount of power the factory draws, and the value of
the line to line voltage supply. The overall power factor of the
factory as a load is also known. Explain the process for
calculating the impedance of each phase of the factory, and the
phase angle between the phase voltage and line current. [4
Marks]
