The Bureau of labor statistics analyzes the employment situation
summary in the United States, considering that the unemployment
rate is at 6.2 percent, as indicated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is reflected in the
labor market, considering that employment has declined in the state
and local governments in mining, education, and construction.
However, there were job gains in leisure and hospitality and
smaller gains in retail trade, manufacturing, healthcare, and
social assistance.
The most interesting fact in the employment situation summary is
despite the pandemic causing health and economic damages in the
country significant increase in the employment in hospitality and
leisure as employment increased by 355,000 as there was ease in
pandemic-related restrictions. Employment rose in food services,
drinking places, accommodation, amusements, recreation, and
gambling. However, this increase is way above the rise in health
care and social assistance, which increased by 46,000 in February,
while employment in leisure and hospitality increased by
355,000.
The analysis of significant employment groups indicates that the
Asian unemployment rate declined to 5.1 percent, White's 5.6
percent, Black's 9.9 percent, and Hispanics to 8.5 percent.
However, there was little change in the decline rate of
unemployment. The rates of adult men were 6 percent, adult women
were 5.9 percent, and teenagers were 13.9 percent. The labor force
participation remains at 61.4 percent, and the
employment-population ratio at 57.6 percent has changed slightly.
The population who prefer full-time employment work part-time
because the hours are reduced as they fail to find full-time jobs.
By February, about 13.3 million individuals were unable to work
because previous employers lost business because of the pandemic.
However, there is a need for supplemental data to gauge the effects
of a pandemic on the labor market, considering that the data is not
seasonally adjusted.
