Problem 3 The cross-section of a dam is shown below. Headwater is on the vertical face of the dam and is flush with the crest. The coefficient of static friction between the foundation and the base of the dam is 0.65. (3.a) Neglecting hydrostatic uplift, determine H if b= 9 m and the factor of safety against sliding must be 1.50. Also compute the corresponding factor of safety against overturning and the corresponding intensity of soil pressure at the heel and at the toe. (3.b) Considering hydrostatic uplift which varies from full hydrostatic head at the heel to zero at the toe and H = 18 m, compute the minimum value of b such that the resultant force cuts the base within the middle thirds near the toe. Also compute the corresponding factors of safety against sliding and overturing as well as the intensity of soil pressure at the toe. 6 m H (s-2.40)
