Question 3 An engine is capable of producing 140 kW at 4000 rpm. Take the coefficient of friction for the clutch as μ = 0.35. Assume a new clutch has just been installed, it is multi-plate clutch, with three discs in the driving shaft and two in the driven shaft, which combined offer 4 pairs of contact surfaces. The clutch discs have internal and external diameter 140 mm and 280 mm. There are 8 coil springs connected to the clutch, each with stiffness 12 kN/m. a) Determine the torque transmitted. (2 marks) b) Torque transmission in clutches is given by the equation T = 2π up fr² dr. Explain the two most common applications of the equation and the situations you would use either one. (4 marks) c) Calculate the total thrust force of the spring pressing the plates together.
