An organic amine (non-volatile liquid) is to be stripped of CO2.
This is to be carried out using pure N2 gas as the stripping agent
in a counter-current packed bed column. The amine enters contains
1.26 mol% CO2 and is to leave with 0.04 mol%. The N2 flow rate is
5.0 mol.s-1 and the liquid flow rate is 4.8 mol.s-1 . The tower
diameter is 0.4 m.
a) Given kOGa = 50 mol.m-3 .s-1 and K = 1.7 at the temperature
of operation, use the analytical method for dilute stripping to
calculate the tower height.
b) Sketch the operating and equilibrium lines for this process
on a y-x plot and briefly explain how the above calculation could
have been carried out graphically. Also, show diagrammatically the
minimum gas flow rate for this case and the subsequent value of NOG
(number of transfer units) at this point.
