Methane and oxygen reacts in the presence of a catalyst to form
formaldehyde:
(R-1) CH4 +
O2 --> H2CO +
H2O
In a side reaction, methane is oxidized as follows
(R-2) CH4 +
O2 --> CO2 +
H2O
The feed contains 70% mol O2 and 30% mol
CH4. The fractional conversion of methane is 0.9511 and
the fractional yield of formaldehyde is 0.8321. Taking a basis of
100 mol of feed, calculate the following:
(a) extent of
reaction, R-1 in mole
(b) extent of
reaction, R-2 in mole
(c) mole of H2O produced
(d) fractional conversion of CH4
(e) % excess of the excess reactant
