1. (a) Figure 1 is an extract from the longitudinal layout of a road project. The cross- sectional areas forming the cuttings at six consecutive chainage intervals are shown alongside the chainages. A5 = 82 m² Chainage 400 A2 = 85 m² Chainage 325 A3 = 65 m² Chainage 350 Chainage 375 A4 = 115 m² Chainage 300 A1 = 105 m² A6 =45m² Chainage 425 Figure 1: Longitudinal layout of a road (1) Determine the bank and loose volumes of earthmoving involved in the section shown given that the soil has an average bulking factor of 1.25. [5 marks] (ii) Estimate the duration (in weeks) required to move the volume of materials given that 2 number backacters with 2.42 m³ bucket each and three (3) number 16 m³ capacity dumper trucks are to be used. [9 marks] The following assumptions apply: Each backacter bucket has simultaneous excavation and loading capacity of 80 % with an output of 30 buckets/hour. Each dumper truck has a positioning time of 4 minutes 5-day working week (8 am - 4 pm) with an hour break per working day.
