Q: At International Syalons ceramic factory, QC worker found that, a batch of Sialon samples were contain surface flaws about 30 µm. The average flaw size was found to be of 10 μm. The required strength (tensile or compressive) for these samples is 502 Mpa. (samples has a fracture toughness Kic of about 4 MPa m¹2 and Z is a constant of the order of 15.) a) What you suggest, these samples could be useful under tensile loads or compressive loads? Justify your choice with calculations. b) Suggest the possible solutions to the production manager, what changes he can made in manufacturing process to improve fracture toughness and impact strength of the sialon samples.
