You have been tasked with characterising a nanoparticle-polymer composite designed for water treatment using photocatalysis. To test the effectiveness of the composite, it is dispersed in a solution of water containing a coloured dye under illumination by a solar simulator for a set period of time.
For each part:
Describe the principle and relevance of the chosen technique.
Detail the required sample preparation.
Describe any relevant limitations of the technique to addressing this problem.
Detail how the data would be analysed.
Describe how you would determine:
(a) The primary particle size of the nanoparticles and the degree of agglomeration of the nanoparticles in the polymer matrix. [4 marks]
(b) The nature of the polymer matrix in terms of its structure and chemistry. [4 marks]
(c) The phase of the metal nanoparticles and whether they have become oxidised.
[4 marks]
(d) Whether the nanoparticles have a coating on their surface to improve their stability within the polymer, and if so, the identity of the coating. [4 marks]
(e) How you could monitor if the composite was having the desired effect of removal of the dye. [4 marks]
