In a typical truck transmission the rear wheels of the tractor
unit are driven via a driveshaft and differential. The engine
provides power to the driveshaft via an 8-speed manual gearbox. A
double plate clutch (similar to that shown in Figure E1 except with
a second clutch plate) allows for the smooth transmission of torque
when changing gears. A Volvo D13 12.8 litre engine generates its
maximum torque when delivering 280 kW at 1000 rpm. The friction
materials used in the clutch have a coefficient of friction of
0.80, the inner radius of the clutch is 100 mm and the clutch has a
clutch face ratio (ro/ri) of 6. Calculate the clutch spring force
required in N so that the clutch provides the torque necessary for
the highest load case during the life of the clutch. Enter only the
numerical value of your answer, to 2 decimal places.
