Question 1. The following measurements of load and extension were taken from a tensile test on a high strength steel conducted at room temperature. The original gauge diameter of the cylindrical specimen was 4.5mm with an original gauge length of 20mm. You must upload your calculations for this question. (excel or hand) Load (N) Extension (mm) 0 0 1600 0.02 3200 0.04 5600 0.07 7200 0.09 9500 0.15 11000 0.25 13200 0.5 14200 0.85 1 14000 13500 1.2 a) Calculate and tabulate the corresponding values of engineering stress and strain. [6 marks] b) Accurately plot the engineering stress-strain curve, including suitably scaled axes, axis labels and appropriate units. (use MS excel or similar) [6 marks] c) Indicate the following on the graph and quote their value: Elastic modulus in GPa i) [2 marks] ii) UTS in MPa [1 mark] Total strain to failure [1 mark] iv) Plastic strain to failure [2 marks] v) Yield strength in MPa [2 marks] vi) 0.2% proof strength in MPa [2 marks] d) Describe the difference between elastic and plastic deformation. [3 marks]
