A steel bar of 1.4 m in length has a diameter of 50 mm and is pinned on both ends and used as a structural member. The modulus of elasticity of the steel, E = 110 GPa and the yield stress, Oy = 220 MPa. a) Calculate the second moment of area, the radius of gyration, and the slenderness ratio of the bar. b) Calculate the critical slenderness ratio and comment on whether the bar is a column (short column) or a strut (long column)? c) Calculate the critical compressive load and the critical buckling stress and comment on whether the bar will buckle or yield.
