Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is a mental disorder
that is characterized by stress exposure, autonomic dysfunction,
sleep disturbances, and altered learning processes. Based on what
we’ve discussed in the mental illness lecture, stress lecture,
ANS/homeostasis lecture, sleep lecture, and memory lecture describe
the pathophysiology of PTSD. In your response, describe (1)
the way that trauma exposure negatively affects the stress system;
(2) how the autonomic nervous system/homeostatic feedback might be
dysfunctional in someone with PTSD; (3) how dreams (nightmares)
associated with PTSD might affect sleep physiology; (4) why these
traumatic memories are so strong/enduring [hint: think about fear
conditioning, and what brain regions are hyper- vs. hypo-active in
PTSD]; and (5) what treatments are available for PTSD.
