George was preparing for a party, and was using his favorite kitchen appliance--a deep fryer-- to make some beer-battered onion rings. His phone rings, and when reaching for it, George knocked the fry daddy off the counter. He doesn't move very well because he is obese. He burned the bottom half of his front torso, the tops of both his feet, and the entirety of both quads. His shins were largely spared, other than minor splatter. This resulted in full thickness burns on his quads, lower front torso, and feet. He is by himself, and calls 9-1-1. It takes about 10 minutes for the paramedics to arrive and assess the situation. By this time, George is unconscious on his kitchen floor from the pain. According to the scenario above and the Rule of 9's, what is the BSA affected by the burn? For a burn of this magnitude (%BSA), what is the general prognosis? What complications might arise? Why are these of particular importance in this case? What treatment is most appropriate for the less severe burns? The most severe? What prognosis do you expect?
