Bonus problem: Suppose that the (3-dimensional; this is important!) figures below were made of very elastic rubber. Show how to deform the first one (without any tear- ing or glueing!) to obtain the second one. (In other words, were the human body elastic enough, after making linked rings with your index fingers and thumbs, you could move your hands apart without separating the joined fingertips.) Why doesn't this exercise show that the Hopf link is splittable? CD
