Tree Ring Age and Climate Identification Tress in the midlatitudes become dormant in winter and start a growth cycle again in warmer months. Doing so adds growth rings. The inner most circle, known as the pith, is the year the tree started growing, successive rings are added on the outside for each year of growth. By counting the rings, we can determine the tree's age, do not count the bark. We can determine past climate conditions by ring width. Thinner rings represent dryer/cooler years. Larger, thicker rings represent wetter/warmer years. In the numbered sample, the tree is 16 years old. The tree experienced a much wetter/warmer season during its eighth year of growth. Use the unnumbered sample to answer the questions. Numbered Sample Unnumbered Sample A 8 10 12 13 14 15 16 1. How old is unnumbered Sample A? 2. What 4 years were the driest/coolest periods that tree "A" experienced so far it its growth?
