Pheromones are like hormones in that they carry a signal from a
cell that secretes it to a receptor on a target cell far away.
However, they aren't hormones because they are signalling between
different individuals. Because this is usually within a species,
the animal secreting the pheromone has both an ability to
synthesize the hormone and the gene for the receptor, although they
are unlikely to express that gene themselves.
