questions, 5. You will learn valuable tools to help you speak in public more confidently. Description of the project: You are a businessman/woman and are looking to educate a room of government officials on the pros and cons of your source of electricity. You want them to thoroughly understand the subject matter, but also want to convince them that you have a plan which will benefit both the people and your company, should they choose to support your business and drive investment your way. You will have a list of questions they want answered, and should have prepared responses to potential questions coming from the audience as well. You will need to prepare professionally, dress professionally, and behave professionally the entire time you are presenting. How it is going to go: You and your team of business professionals will need to have a research document which you develop in preparation for your presentation, where I can see what you researched from what sources, and that is laid out well enough that your investors can see the flow of information in your presentation. This will need to be submitted with your presentation (there will be an example of this document given) You and your team will use the information you have gathered to create a presentation on google slides (must be google slides, not powerpoint or word, etc.) which you will present. It will need to be casy to understand, contain the necessary information, and be of an appropriate length for the time allotted. (I will teach you how to consider the quality of your slides.) You will have a time restriction, telling you to take up at least a certain amount of time, but not more than a certain amount of time, for the whole presentation. Each member of your team will share with the class. This means you will have to practice what to say, how long to take, and how to say it. I do not require that each member of the group speak equally, but each person must do public speaking on one topic or another. (ic: you might present on how wind power works, but your teammate might only give the opening address, and then advance your slides)
How to prepare: Each group will be given one of the following sources of electricity production: Coal Natural Gas Nuclear Hydroelectric (River+Tidal) Biofuels (potential for different kinds) Geothermal Wind Solar You will want to address the following concerns: 1. How does your source actually produce electricity? 2. How powerful is your source, and how efficient is the process? Is there a lot of energy lost during production? 3. Are there byproducts, waste, etc. produced from your source? How much? 4. How expensive is it to get a plant up and running? How much does each plant produce? 5. Why isn't your source of electricity more popular right now? What is the chief concern of your opponents, and how valid are they? (remember, you want to win the grant!) 6. What is your proposal, exactly, for your grant? What's your pitch? Where will you use your grant? How will you use it? How much do you need? Who will make it happen?, etc? 7. Answer additional follow up questions that might arise based on what you've said. In order to be able to do all of this (which may seem daunting), you will need to do some quality research in advance. This is what your research document is for. It is not an essay or a research paper, to be clear. This is a record of what you learned, and where you learned it from. This should be a shared document between your group, so all can see what you are doing. YOU WILL HAVE TIME TO WORK ON THIS IN CLASS, BUT NOT UNLIMITED TIME. YOU WILL NEED TO DELEGATE TASKS, AND WORK OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL TO SOME EXTENT TO DO WELL Plagiarism When doing research, completing projects, papers, etc. the words and information on that document should be your own. Copying and pasting from the internet can get you in BIG trouble (although it can help you initially gather your information). So make sure, when you do research, you understand the topic well enough to communicate it in your own language both on the slides, and in person From experience, I can tell you: I am VERY perceptive about this. I will know if you don't know your stuff, because I know some stuff. Please be prepared
Names This is your research document that you will use to collect information before putting it into your presentation. Here you may copy and paste, use exact quotes, etc. with no problems Split up the roles for your research a bit here. Write down who is going to gather what information. Keep in mind that realistically, each question will have to be discussed by each member in the group prior to making your presentation, but this is a good way to start off. Who is doing what to begin with ?: I Source 1: URL: What does this source say? What questions from the project will this help answer? (ex question 1. And 3.) Source 2: URL: What does this source say? What questions from the project will this help answer? (ex: question 1. And 3.)
Source 3: URL: What does this source say? What questions from the project will this help answer? (ex: question 1. And 3.) Source 4: URL: -What does this source say? 1 What questions from the project will this help answer? (ex: question 1. And 3.) Source 5: URL: What does this source say? What questions from the project will this help answer? (ex: question 1. And 3.) Copy and paste more source 6, source 7, etc. as needed for sources... What ?'s do these sources and information bring up to you? Or what would your listeners need answered in their brains to have everything make sense?... Then go answer those questions, using the same approach!
Given that you now have the information for each of the required questions figured out, what's the best way to present each question #? For example, is a bulleted list best? Would a diagram be best? Or perhaps you'd like to highlight some statistics and data for one of the points? Start planning the slides here: Slide 1: What's it for, and what goes on it? I Slide 2: What's it for, and what goes on it? Slide 3: What's it for, and what goes on it? Slide 4: What's it for, and what goes on it? Slide 5: What's it for, and what goes on it? Hopefully this helps you get your approach down. Now you should be all start putting slides together using all the info you put down here.
