4. Coming Up on ABC: Cecil and Gretta have just hired a stunt double for all of Buster's really dangerous stunts in Animal Control Officer: Life on the Streets. By this point in the semester, you probably know that the stunt double that they hired is actually Buster. (a) In one scene, Buster must venture into a vault containing radioactive isotopes because Cecil wants to know if the light turns out when the vault door is closed and locked. Cecil wants to film this from as many angles as possible and with multiple takes. As long as Buster is in the vault, help him determine the (i) decay reaction for Uranium-238 (by alpha decay), (ii) the associated "mass-defect," and (iii) the energy liberated in this process. (b) In the next scene, Buster needs to steal the 1-d infinite square well from the giant dog (named Dandelion) down the street. The square well has width, L. (i) Derive the first three normalized wave functions of the confined particle of mass, m. (ii) What are the associated energies of these three states? (iii) What photon wavelength would be required to allow the confined particle to transition from the n=1 state to the n=3 state? (c) In next week's episode, Gretta sends Buster to infiltrate a rogue gang of particle physicists. The particle physicists are suspicious of Buster (spoiler alert: because Gretta told them that Buster was a spy) and decide to test his knowledge of particle physics. (i) Quickly remind Buster why the following decay is disallowed: 1p+ + n° → ¹p+ + µ+ +μ so that Buster doesn't blow his cover. (ii) That was close, but now the particle physicists want Buster to prove that he is truly one of them by indicating whether the following reaction would be allowed or not... 1p+ + n° + energy → 1p+ + n° + 1p+ + -1p¯ What do you think? (d) In the cliffhanger ending, in order to diffuse a bomb, Buster needs to list each electron configuration (n, l, m, ms) for the n=4 state of the hydrogen atom.
