1. A 2000kg batch of a solution containing 50% weight acetone is to be extracted with an equal weight of water. The raffinate from the first extraction is to be reextracted with a weight of water equal to the raffinate weight, product of the previous extraction and so on. a) How many theoretical stages will be required to reduce the acetone content of the raffinate to less than 10% of the final raffinate. b) How much total water will be required for the second stage? Hint: For part a) use a ruler and the lever rule to find graphically the number and composition each stage.
