The sucrose inversion reaction is performed in a packed bed reactor using a cationic ion- exchange resin. The reaction follows first order kinetics with respect to sucrose concentration (Reed, 1964). Reed et.al., using space velocity in their work, determined the rate constant as equal to 0.168 min-1 at 70°C when the mean resin particle size was 0.715 mm. concentration A student attempts to duplicate the work in a packed bed reactor (PBR). The conditions for the student's test at a steady state are listed in Table 2: Table 2: Packed Bed Reactor Conditions 25 cm 20 cm 8 cm 0.6 Height of the reactor Height of the resin bed section (excluding the glass bead section at the top and bottom) Diameter of the reactor Void fraction (Sum of intra and inter particle void fractions) Flow rate of sucrose solution Sucrose concentration in the feed Sucrose concentration in the exiting solution Reaction temperature Viscosity of the solution at 70°C Average resin particle size 250 mL/min 10 g/L 5.1 g/L 70°C 0.5 cp 0.72 mm CLOUD
