A long, slender structural steel HSS8X4X1/4 (E = 29,000 ksi, liyy=14.4 in, Izz=42.5in, A=5.24in2) is used as a 32 ft long column. The column is supported in the x direction at base A and pinned at ends A and C against translation in the y and z directions. Lateral support is provided to the column, so deflection in the x-z plane is restrained at mid-height B; however, the column is free to deflect in the x-y plane at B. A factor of safety of 2.0 is required for buckling and yielding analysis. Determine the following: 1) The allowable P that cause buckling about the strong axis (i.e., the z axis) 2) The allowable P that cause buckling about the weak axis (i.e., the y axis) of the steel column. 3) The allowable P that cause column to yield (0y=42ksi) 4) The maximum allowable P that the column can carry HSS8 4x1 у 16 ft B Lateral bracing 16 ft
