Question 3 (15 marks) (a) A fixed-height symmetric cantilever retaining wall has been proposed to a particular site (see the figure below). The site conditions do not allow the base slab width to exceed 2 m, and the project budget permits only a small increase of overall concrete volume for the retaining wall. The designer was able to meet the required factors of safety against overturning and bearing capacity with the design geometry shown in the figure in fact, the factor of safety against bearing capacity was found to be considerably higher than the required value for that). However, the given geometry could not meet the required factor of safety against sliding. Taking the site conditions and budget constraints into consideration propose TWO alternative design geometries that may improve the factor of safety against sliding without significantly
reducing the factors of safety against overturning and bearing capacity (draw sketches and briefly explain how the proposed geometries will increase the factor of safety against sliding without significantly affecting the other two factors of safety). Note that the thickness of the different parts of the wall cannot be changed due to the requirements for internal structural stability. You DO NOT need to do actual calculations.
