Problem 31 A very long channel starts at a reservoir as shown in the figure. The discharge flowing along the channel ran
Problem 31 A very long channel starts at a reservoir as shown in the figure. The discharge flowing along the channel ranges between 0.5 m/s and 40 m/s and depends on the water level in the reservoir, h. After some years, it is observed that for water levels higher than a value h, the discharge is slightly lower than the discharge flowing just after the channel was built. The channel geometry (slope and cross section) has not been altered. For water levels h<ho the discharge has not changed. Field observations show that for a water level h1=3.85 m, being h1>ho, the flow discharge is Q2 =32 m/s. The channel characteristics are shown in the figure below. • Indicate the value ho, and the discharge Qe for this water level in the reservoir. • Draw schematically the water surface and indicate the type of the existing profiles in the channel for water levels in the reservoir lower than ho, equal to ho, and higher than ho. h B=2.5 m i=0.01 Channel cross section Local energy losses at the channel inlet can be neglected
