Question Seven: Calculate the characteristic surface movement for the following site conditions given: Seasonal moisture and surface soil suction variations were estimated at 2.8 m and 1.2 pF. • Depth of geotechnical site investigation was 3 m. • Ground stratigraphy consisted of a shallow layer of sandy topsoil (0.2 m thick) overlying a layer of clayey SILT (ML) material (0.4 m thick) overlying a uniform layer of highly plastic CLAY (CH). • Bedrock was encountered at 2.35 m. • Groundwater was not encountered. • A shrink-swell index on the highly plastic CLAY (CH) yielded an index of 2.4. • Assume the maximum depth of shrinkage cracks to be 0.5Hs.
