The molded reinforced plastic propeller system is subject to
vibration. One aspect of analyzing a structure for vibration is
determining the stiffness of the structure. Consider the force F0
applied to the tip of the blade as shown. Determine the magnitude
of the force that would cause a deflection of 1mm. (Note that this
deflection is caused due to twist of the shaft, bending of the
shaft, and bending of ½ of the propeller, which can be analyzed as
being clamped at point B, where it is attached to the shaft. Also,
remember the difference between the polar moment of inertia for
torsion and the moment of inertia for bending for a round shaft)
The shaft is 25 mm in diameter. Approximate the blade as having a
rectangular cross-section with dimensions given. (E= 50 GPa,
v=0.38, and G= 18 GPa).
