The wood beam ABC is 3.5 in wide, 5.5 in high, and 14 ft long.
The elastic modulus of the wood is 1.7 (103) ksi. An A-36 steel rod
8 ft long is attached to the center of the beam. Determine what the
diameter of the steel rod must be if the deflection is to be ½ of
its value without the rod. (Note: If it is helpful, you can assume
a distributed load of 1 kip/ft.)
