Question 1 [25 marks A uniform thin-walled beam of anti-symmetrical cross-section has a length 2 m and wall thickness 1.5 mm. It is built-in at one end at point A and is subjected to a concentrated load of 100 N at the free-end position B as shown Figure Q1(a). The load is acting vertically downward in the cross section of the beam as shown in Figure Q1(b). The wall thickness may be considered to be small in comparison with other dimensions when calculating the cross-sectional properties of the beam. (a) Calculate the sectional properties Ic, Iyy and Lay for the cross section. [8 marks (b) Calculate the maximum stresses in the cross section at the built-in end of the beam, stating clearly points of tensile and compressive stresses in the cross section. [12 marks (C) Determine the neutral axis and sketch the stress distribution in the cross section. 15 marks] t" 100 N 100 N B 14 2 m 40 mm 1.5 mm Figure Q1(a) 3 20 mm Figure Q1(b) (Not to scale)
