QUESTION ONE a.) During an engine trial on a four stroke, six cylinder engine, the cylinder bore is 180 mm, stroke 200 mm. the following observations were recorded; Engine speed is 1500 rpen, Brake power 245 kW, mean effective pressure is 8 bar, fuel consumption is 70kg/hr, calorific value of fuel is 44 MJ/kg, the hydrogen content of the fuel is 12% while air consumption is 28kg/min, mass of cooling water is 85 kg/min and the cooling water undergoes temperature rise of 42°C with specific heat capacity of 4.187 kJ/kgK. The cooling oil circulating through the engine at 50kg/min undergoes temperature rise of 24°C and has specific heat of 2.1 kJ/kgK. The room temperature during the test was 30°C while exhaust gas temperature is 400°C. The exhaust has specific heal capacity of 1.045 kJ/KgK. The partial pressure of steam in exhaust is 0.035 bar. From these data; i) Indicated power (4 marks) ii.) Determine mechanical efficiency (3 marks) iii.) Draw up a heat/energy balance ( 23 marks) b.) Explain the role of additives in lubrication oil with specific examples for each (10 marks)
