4- (Oor 10 Two " thick plates are used to confine a steel hydraulic cylinder 4" thick, shown in section, using eight 3/8" UNC SAE grade 5 bolts. Both inside and sealing diameters are equal to 5". The pressure inside the cylinder varies between 900 and 1800 psi. For the purposes of calculating the stiffnesses, you may assume the bolt to be entirely unthreaded and the 1/2" plates and the cylinder flanges to be perfectly rigid. a) If a factor of safety of 1.5 is required against joint separation, what should the preload be? b) If the preload per bolt is set at 5 kips, check the static and dynamic (use Goodman) safety of the joint. 12 121 1/4" 16 3/4" UNC Crude 5
