Reading (Items) Measurments GML 8: 2mL 8.2-6 - 2.2mL 6ml Water Water Kernals Volume of unpoped popcorn kernels 2S0ML Round Flask Mass of flask with all 20 Kemals & Flask mass of beaker + popped corn 151.47 grams 126 6 grams 129.81g + 129.189
Determine the mass of the 20 unpopped kernels of popcorn. Determine the mass of the 20 popped kernels of popcorn. Determine the mass of the water that was lost when the popcorn popped. Determine the percentage by mass of water. I Determine the pressure (P) inside the kernels that popped; use temperature of boiling oil 225°C; pressure 1 atm
POPPING POPCORNS Name Date: Introduction: Popcorn pops because of the natural moisture inside each kernel. When the internal water is heated above 100°C, the liquid water changes to a gas, which takes up much more space than the liquid, so the kernel expands rapidly. The popping process works best when the kernels are first coated with a small amount of vegetable oil. Hypothesis and Variables: Imagine your craving for popcorn and all you have are the following: 3 different types of oil, popcorn kernels, and a metal pot. The sooner it pops, the better! Mention the different variables to test your question and make a hypothesis. Procedure: First find the volume of kernels (use water displacement technique) 1. Measure the mass of a 250ml round flask. Record the mass in the Data table. 2. Add a small amount of vegetable oil to the beaker to coat the bottom of it. Measure the mass of the beaker and oil. Record the mass in the Data table. 3. Add 20 kernels (wiped dry) to the flask. Shake the beaker gently to coat the kernels with oil. Measure the mass of the beaker, oil, and popcorn. Record the mass in the Data table. 4. Record the mass of 20 unpopped kernels in the Data table. 5. Cover the beaker loosely with aluminum foil. Punch a few small holes in the aluminum foil. These holes should not be large enough to let the popping corn pass
5. Cover the beaker loosely with aluminum foil. Punch a few small holes in the aluminum foil. These holes should not be large enough to let the popping corn pass through 6. Heat the popcorn until most of the kernels have popped. 7. Remove the aluminum foil from the beaker and allow the beaker to cool for 10 minutes. Then, measure the mass of the beaker, oil, and popped corn. Record the mass in the Data table. 8. Find the mass of water that escaped when the corn popped. Record the mass in the Data table. 9. Calculate the percentage of water in the popcorn. 10. DO NOT EAT POPCORNS and Dispose of the popcorn in the designated container. Remove the aluminum foil and set it aside. Clean the beaker and dry it well.
